Featuring Damon Smith and the Quality Lightweights, Tracy McNeil Band, The Stillsons, The Miserable Little Bastards and Alysia Manceau – Saturday 31 March, The Empress

In the last twelve months, Melbourne has seen a creative explosion in country-folk releases. The album may have been declared dead by many, but for artists and fans, they are still understood as the ultimate artistic statement.

“You may not know it from watching the ARIAs or listening to mainstream radio, but independent artists have been creating albums of sterling quality and fans are starting to vote with their feet,” says Les Thomas editor of Unpaved, a Melbourne-based website dedicated to country, folk and roots.

Unpaved is celebrating some of these releases with a special showcase on Saturday March 31 at The Empress, Fitzroy with a phenomenal lineup of local talent including Damon Smith and the Quality Lightweights, Tracy McNeil Band, The Stillsons and The Miserable Little Bastards.

More recently The Miserable Little Bastards album Misery Loves Company has been greeted with great acclaim from the Melbourne music press. Alysia Manceau and Shelley Short – The Retreat Hotel, April 4th

Alysia Manceau will be weaving her dark folk-rock balladry again at The Retreat Hotel front bar on Wednesday 4th April.  Described as ‘Sounding like a cigarette dipped in honey’, Alysia is known for her powerful vocals and trademark guitar style and has attracted a loyal Melbourne following since the local release of her debut album, The Longest Winter last year. The Longest Winter is proudly presented by Gretson Records and is now available from iTunes, all good Melbourne record stores and via Gretson online store: www.gretsonrecords.com

Alysia will be supported by touring Portland, Oregon native, songwriter and singer Shelley Short.  Shelley who plays a mixture of indie-folk pop grew up among characters and artists in a wood-heated home full of books, records, and well-cooked meals. As Short recounts: “It was like growing up in a time machine; in some ways we lived like in 1876, chopping wood, growing our own food, wearing old clothes in a Victorian home and singing our own songs. Other times it seemed like we were living in 1955, driving around Cadillacs and Studebakers and listening to Jonny Ray and The Flamingos. And yet it all felt like growing up in a blurring movie made in 1963, full of these big personalities. As a kid I grew up so accustomed to falling asleep to the sound of talk and laughter that when I moved out, the silence got to me.”

You can listen to Shelley’s latest recordings, check tour dates and buy her album online at her website: www.shelleyshortmusic.com

Rich Davies and The Devils Union – Album Review by Patrick Emery- Beat Magazine 01/02/2012

‘Back in the day, rock’n’roll was denounced as the devil’s music. It was hardly an original condemnation – Robert Johnson famously (and almost certainly gratuitously) suggested he’d sold his soul in exchange for prowess on the guitar – while the tight bond between church, state and high art in centuries past provided a convenient opportunity to marginalise any proletariat musical form as the work of the devil…’

Unpaved Review of Rich Davies & The Devil’s Union Debut Album by Les Thomas

Les Thomas, the man behind Melbourne’s newest music blog dedicated to folk/country Unpaved recently reviewed The Devils Union’s Debut Album.

‘Rich Davies cites Bruce Springsteen as his greatest musical hero, so anyone familiar with the Nebraska album will find immediate lyrical connections in the opening track I Died in the Morning Sun. There’s a long drive across state lines, danger, violent death from the barrel of a gun. Musically the sounds are sparse, a mournful whale-song of strings and gentle piano. Vocally, Davies inhabits a song like a method actor inhabits a character, to the point that you worry how he got the shiner on his right eye on the album cover. Every inflection of his voice is used to hold lyrical tension until song’s end…’
